Change and Transitions
Adaptation is what we are naturally capable of doing as Humans...
I came across the word transition for the first time when I was 15/16 ish around the same time I was preparing for my G.C.S.E'.S. It was like a buzz word, I could not get away from the word. It was that period of time when you had to decide what you are going to do with your future and start planning for it. I had no clue! the future did not seem exciting or much to look forward to, don't get me wrong my adolescent self was looking forward to not having to go to school again but beyond that, the future was pretty non existent. I was genuinely worried, things was going to change and I did not know what it was going to change to neither if I am going to like it.
So why I am saying all of this?, well if I had an audience with my adolescent self I would have told him these words... I would have told him not to worry because life will figure itself out, I would have told him to embrace the change that is before him, I would have told him to see change as a positive and not a negative, I would have told him before him lies some of the most exciting times, howbeit trying at times and might require a bit of perseverance but nonetheless it will be worth the journey. I would have told him on the road ahead lies adventures filled with self discovery and Identification, memories, the best mistakes and worst mistakes, exciting new friends to be made, old friends to grow out of. New Ideology to believe in, old Ideology to be tested. A chance to grow, not into the person that he wants to but into the person he will be, new dreams that he will have, some already fulfilled others about to come true. I would have told him I had a time capsule, I have been to the future and based on what I have seen he would love every minute of it. I will tell him he will make mistakes, some so bad that he would question did he really do that? He would have regrets, some so painful that he will question his dignity but at this point looking a bit closer at him, I will tell him not to worry about them because the mistakes and regrets have helped shaped him. They have helped change is perspectives and shape his thinking, at this point I'll quote him what Freud told Putnam 'that we are what we are because we have been what we have been'. At this point he will ask him 'who is Freud?' and I would laugh
Looking at him, I would analyse him with the insight of my current self and notice the change I have been through. I would become more appreciative of the person I now am, the stage I am at. I will also become less critical of not been where I want to be instead become more appreciative of the journey it has taken me to get there.
Empowered by this self evaluation I will then write this words about change and transitions:
Change and transitions are not desirable, they are difficult, sometimes painful, they leave us not been in control. But they are necessary, in fact inevitable. However with the right preparation and attitude it leads to a higher level, 'THE BETTER'. I am aware that there is a transition stage coming up for most people, transition from University into work, for some this is daunting, for others they can't wait. Which ever scenario you fall into, do not forget how far you have come and let that be your fuel for the next level.
